Depo-Provera (medroxyprogesterone acetate)

An injectable contraceptive (a shot). It is given by your doctor as 1 shot in the buttock or upper arm. Each shot prevents pregnancy for up to 3 months. Depo-Provera is a progesterone, which is a hormone normally produced by the ovaries every month as part of the menstrual cycle.

Depo-Provera prevents pregnancy by:

  • Preventing ovulation
  • Makes difficult for egg to be fertilized
  • Implant
When you are ready to get pregnant, THE side effect (in most cases) is no menstrual bleeding for at least 6 months after 1 year of use. 

When you want to conceive, having regular menstrual cycles enables you to predict ovulation.
